I am in Maine learning how to make wooden furniture by hand. My first project is a small bench or end table made of maple and finished with soap, a Danish tradition. It is joined with dovetails, floating tenons, and a custom brass piece that allows for seasonal wood movement. I used the letterforms of the Latin alphabet as a starting point for design. This came from my favorite sketch, based on a lower case "t". The base is an extruded rectilinear t. I photographed it at the entrance to our machine room, where by chance a white panel was scattering the afternoon sunlight.
